Adding a Point-of-Care Test (POCT) - Drug

What is a Point-of-Care Test (POCT) and what is it used for?

A POCT is a test that is performed outside of a laboratory at the point-of-care, with the donor, to screen for the presence of a specific substance. In the case of drug testing, a POCT device is used to perform an initial screening of urine and oral fluid specimens for the presence of drugs. On-site test devices can test single or multiple drugs simultaneously and are available in a number of different configurations.

The following are step-by-step directions for adding a drug POCT test to Veriport.


  1. Click the “POCT” drop-down menu on the top menu bar.


  1. Select “Add POCT”.

  2. Now you will need to select the employer for whom you are adding the test.

  3. Next you will need to select that the test is a “New Drug Test POCT”.

         
  1. Now you will be prompted to enter the test information; test date, sufficient volume, sufficient temperature, observed.

  2. If you want to, you are now able to upload a copy of the test form. If you would like to do this then after entering the test info you will be asked to “Upload” the test form, then “Upload” the test results, and then enter the test form ID.

  3. At this point, you may add any comments which are required for the test.


Collection Site:

  1. To enter the collection site, select the correct site from the pulldown under “Collection Site”. If the collection site you are using has not yet been entered you are able to add a new collection site at this time if needed by clicking the green “+ Add Collection Site” button. This will give you fields to enter the new site information. For more information on what a collection site is or more information on how to enter one please see the “Collection Site” article.


          

Employee:

  1. If the test is for an employee who has already been entered into the system you can select them from the pulldown “Donor”. If the employee has NOT yet been entered into the system you can add them by clicking the green “Add Employee” button.



      10. Select the reason for the test from the pulldown

Testing Device:

  1. Select the “Test Device Used”. You may add a new testing device at this time if you need to. *Please see “Adding a Testing Device for POCT” article.

  2. Enter the “Lot Number” and “Expiration Date” of the device.

*A lot number is a number that is given to a batch of a product to identify that batch/lot of the product. It can normally be found on the outside packaging of a product. It is normally placed next to the product expiration date (See image below).


Confirmation Test:

  1. Select if the specimen is to be tested at the laboratory “Yes” or “No”; If yes, enter the Specimen ID and date sent to the lab.


Results:

  1. Now select “Non-Negative”, “Negative”, or “Invalid” for the drugs tested.

  2. Select “Pass” or “Fail” for; creatinine, colour, and specific gravity.


  1. You will now be able to click “Submit”. Be sure you have entered all of the information correctly as you are unable to edit after submitting.


After reviewing click “Yes, save and close” and you have successfully entered your drug POCT!
