Choosing Test Types: Regulated, Urine, or Oral Fluid Options
After selecting the client and donor, the next critical step in placing a Lab Order in Veriport is choosing the appropriate test type. This includes specifying whether the test is regulated or non-regulated, and selecting the specimen collection method (urine or oral fluid). This article guides you through the available options, how to select them, and key considerations for compliance and accuracy.
Understanding Test Type Options
Veriport supports the most common drug testing configurations used by TPAs:
The combination of regulated/non-regulated and urine/oral fluid determines the exact test panel, collection requirements, and pricing displayed later in the process.
Step-by-Step: Selecting the Test Type
- Reach the Test Details Section
After confirming the client and donor details, click Continue or Next to arrive at the "Test Type" Choose Regulated or Non-Regulated
- Select Regulated if the test falls under DOT or other federal regulations (Veriport will prompt for confirmation of the specific authority, e.g., FMCSA, if needed).
- Select Non-Regulated for all other workplace testing programs.
Note: If the client has default settings configured (e.g., most tests are regulated), this may pre-select for you—always verify based on the reason for testing.
Select whether "Observed Collection" is required. Please notee that collection sites will be limited based on this requirement.
Select the Specific Test Panel (if prompted)
Depending on your selection:
- Common panels appear (e.g., 5-panel DOT Urine, 10-panel Non-Regulated Oral Fluid, Expanded Opiates, etc.).
- Search or filter for custom/add-on panels if your client requires them (e.g., +Oxycodone, +Fentanyl, +Alcohol EtG).
- If no specific panel is shown, Veriport uses the client's default or standard panel for the chosen type.
Review and Confirm
Double-check your selections:
- Regulated/Non-Regulated status
- Urine or Oral Fluid
- Panel name or description
ClickContinue to proceed to collection site selection and pricing.
Key Considerations
- Compliance First: For regulated tests, always select "Regulated" to ensure proper chain-of-custody, collector certification, and MRO involvement. Choosing incorrectly can invalidate the test.
- Client Defaults: Many clients have pre-configured preferences—check the client billing or test settings if selections seem unexpected.
- Oral Fluid Limitations: Not all panels or regulated scenarios support oral fluid—Veriport will indicate if a combination is unavailable.
- Reason for Test: The reason (pre-employment, random, post-accident, etc.) may influence the required type—enter this if prompted for better defaults and reporting.
Common Issues and Fixes
- Desired panel not available: Confirm the specimen type and regulated status match the panel requirements. Contact support for custom panel requests.
- Option grayed out: This indicates incompatibility (e.g., certain DOT tests require urine). Choose an available alternative or consult the client.
- Unexpected default selection: Review client-specific test configurations in Clients → Test Settings.
